Has DEI Always Existed Under a Different Name?

Wooden tiles spell the word "LEGACY" beside a colorful globe.

Many argue that we’ve always had DEI, just under different names. Efforts to address inequality—whether through civil rights movements, affirmative action, or workplace fairness initiatives—have always sought to create a level playing field. The language may change, but the mission endures.

This raises an important point: The principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are foundational to societal and organizational progress. Whether we call it DEI or something else, the work of creating equitable opportunities and fostering belonging will always be necessary.

The question is, how do we make this mission effective when some people view DEI through a negative lens? It starts with authenticity. Organizations must go beyond performative gestures to demonstrate real commitment to fairness and inclusion. Only then can we move from skepticism to trust and from division to unity.
