When discussing hot topics like politics, DEI, or other sensitive issues, it’s essential to start by asking yourself: Is this conversation worth risking the relationship? Sometimes the best way to preserve a relationship is to avoid volatile discussions altogether, especially when emotions run high. If you value the person more than proving your point, it might be better to step back.
This is where my ACT model comes in: Approach others with an open heart, Connect to understand, and Tap into diverse perspectives. Instead of diving into heated conversations, try focusing on understanding the other person’s viewpoint. When we approach conversations with curiosity instead of conviction, we can avoid unnecessary conflict while still respecting each other’s differences.
Remember, your response is your responsibility. Sometimes, the most powerful response is to disengage gracefully, choosing to value the relationship over being “right.” Exercising this choice is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
